Model
우리는 일상에서 수많은 건물을 마주하며 살아간다. 물리적 현실뿐만 아니라 메타버스라는 디지털 공간에서도 건축물은 존재한다. 이 모든 건축의 시작점에는 태곳적부터 존재해 온 '모형(Model)'이 있다. 본 작업 <Model>은 여기서 시작된 질문, 즉 "건축적 행위의 원본성은 어디에 존재하는가?"에 대한 탐구다.
통상적으로 건축이란 물리적인 힘을 가해 무언가를 들어 올리고 쌓아 올리는 육체적 노동의 결과물이다. 단순히 컴퓨터 프로그램 안에서 매끈한 조감도를 그려내는 것을 우리는 건축이라 부르지 않는다. 그러나 현대 사회에서 노동은 점차 파편화되고 추상화되어, 노동자조차 전체 구조를 파악하기 힘든 형태로 변모했다.
나는 이 작업에서 3D 프린팅이라는 방식을 통해 디지털 데이터가 물리적 실체로 변환되는 과정에 주목한다. 3D 프린터가 재료를 한 층 한 층 쌓아 올리는(Layering) 반복적인 움직임은 그 자체로 건축적 노동의 수행이다. 이것은 단순한 출력이 아니라, 비물질적인 디지털 세계의 원본성을 물리적 세계로 가져와 다시 정립하는 과정이다.
재료가 적층되며 비로소 형상을 갖추는 이 과정을 통해 나는 묻는다. 구조를 만드는 본질적인 행위는 무엇이며, 이 시대의 진정한 건축과 노동의 의미는 어디에 있는가.
Model
We live facing numerous buildings in our daily lives. Architecture exists not only in physical reality but also in the digital space called the Metaverse. The starting point of all this architecture is the 'Model,' which has existed since time immemorial. This work, Model, involves an inquiry that begins here: "Where does the originality of architectural action lie?"
Typically, architecture is the result of physical labor—lifting and stacking something with physical force. We do not call it architecture to simply draw a smooth bird's-eye view within a computer program. However, in modern society, labor has gradually become fragmented and abstracted, transforming into a form where even the laborer struggles to grasp the entire structure.
In this work, I focus on the process of converting digital data into physical reality through 3D printing. The repetitive movement of the 3D printer stacking material layer by layer is, in itself, the performance of architectural labor. This is not mere output, but a process of bringing the originality of the immaterial digital world into the physical world and re-establishing it.
Through this process, where materials are stacked to finally take shape, I ask: What is the essential act of creating structure, and where lies the true meaning of architecture and labor in this era?
