Architecture by Sound

당연하게도 우리는 일상에서 수없이 많은 ‘건물’들을 마주한다. 우리의 삶 대부분은 건물 내부에서 이루어지며 심지어 디지털 안에서도—이를테면 메타버스라든지—건물을 마주한다. 그리고 이 건물들의 건축은 태곳적 모형으로부터 시작했으리라.
그리고 여기서 작가는 의문을 품는다: 과연 태곳적의 건축 모형과 건물, 둘 중 무엇이 ‘원본성’을 지니는가?
다시 건물 이야기로 돌아가 보자. 건축은 수없이 많은 ‘노동’을 통해 성립된다. 지금, 이 전시를 보고 있는 당신이 발을 딛고 서 있는 건물 또한 마찬가지리라. 그리고 《음악으로 건축하기》는 여기서 중요한 질문을 던진다: 건축의 노동에 있어 원본성을 가지는 노동은 무엇인가? 건물을 짓기 위해 육체적 노동을 하는 인부, 디지털세계의 원본을 현실 세계에서 가시화시키는 3D 프린터, 그래픽을 설계하게끔 하는 컴퓨터, 그 앞의 사람. 무엇이 원본인지에 대한 답은 내릴 수 없으나 우리가 보편적으로 떠올리는 노동인 건물을 짓는 인부와 여러 물리적인 행위만이 답은 아니라는 것이다.
현대사회에는 노동이 추상화되며 파편화된다. 노동자는 전체 작업의 일부분만 담당하며 전체 알 수 없다. 전체에 다가갈 수 없고 구조에서 멀어진다. 작가는 이에 대한 은유로 루프 스테이션을 등장시킨다. 반복이라는 행위 아래 노동과 루핑되는 사운드는 동일성을 갖는다.
건물의 본질은 구조를 만드는 것에 있다. 구조를 볼 수 없는 노동보다 구조를 만드는 사운드가 건축이라는 본질에 더욱 가까워진다.
Architecture by Sound
Naturally, we encounter countless ‘buildings’ in our daily lives. Most of our lives take place inside buildings, and we even encounter them in the digital realm—such as the Metaverse. And the architecture of these buildings must have started from primordial models.
Here, the artist raises a question: Which possesses ‘originality,’ the primordial architectural model or the building?
Let's go back to the story of buildings. Architecture is established through countless forms of ‘labor.’ The building you are standing in right now, viewing this exhibition, is no exception. And Architecture by Sound asks a crucial question here: What labor possesses originality in the labor of architecture? The laborer who performs physical work to construct the building, the 3D printer that visualizes digital originals in the real world, the computer that enables graphic design, and the human in front of it. We cannot define what the original is, but the answer is not solely the laborer building the structure or the physical acts we typically associate with labor.
In modern society, labor becomes abstracted and fragmented. The laborer is responsible for only a part of the whole task and cannot know the whole. They cannot approach the whole and become distant from the structure. The artist introduces the Loop Station as a metaphor for this. Under the act of repetition, labor and looping sound possess identity.
The essence of a building lies in creating structure. Sound that creates structure is closer to the essence of architecture than labor that cannot see the structure.
