《남겨진 감각들》은 가시적인 형태를 지녔던 것들이 사라진 뒤에도 지속되는 감각을 다루는 전시이다. 우리는 통상 윤곽과 형태를 통해 어떤 대상의 존재를 확인한다. 경계와 부피, 빛과 그림자가 만드는 실루엣처럼 시각적으로 식별되는 것이 곧 존재의 근거가 되어왔다. 그러나 존재의 증거를 시각에 전적으로 의존할 때, 우리는 형태가 물러간 뒤에도 여전히 남아 있는 것들을 놓치게 된다. 이 전시는 그러한 시각 중심의 인식에서 대상의 형태를 의도적으로 비워내고, 그것이 떠난 자리에 남는 비가시적인 잔여에 주목한다.
이러한 잔여는 대상이 사라졌다고 해서 함께 소멸하지 않는다. 그것은 직접적인 현존과 완전한 부재 사이의 중간 상태로, 일정한 시간 동안 공간에 머물다 서서히 흩어진다. 보는 것과 만지는 것이 대상의 현존을 전제하는 감각이라면, 무언가를 감지하는 것은 대상이 부재한 상태에서도 작동하는 감각이다. 우리는 눈앞에 아무것도 없을 때에도 방금 그 자리에 무엇이 있었음을 안다. 이때 작동하는 감각은 특정한 형태나 명칭으로 환원되기 이전의 것으로, 시각적으로 확인되거나 언어로 명확히 규정되지 않는 영역에 속한다. 《남겨진 감각들》은 이 영역, 곧 보이지 않지만 감지되는 것들이 머무는 지점을 전시의 대상으로 삼는다.
전시에 소개되는 작업들은 이러한 감각의 잔여를 각기 다른 방식으로 다룬다. 작업들은 정해진 동선이나 주제 구분 없이 한 공간에 병치되어 서로 느슨하게 연결되며, 관객은 작업과 작업 사이를 오가는 동안 보이지 않는 것들이 만들어내는 또 다른 층위의 공간을 경험하게 된다.
각 작업은 하나의 결론을 제시하기보다, 형태가 사라진 자리에 무엇이 남는가라는 공통의 질문에 각자의 방식으로 접근한다. 그 답은 소리일 수도, 냄새일 수도, 빛의 잔상일 수도, 혹은 아직 명확히 규정되지 않은 어떤 감각일 수도 있다. 표현 매체에는 제한을 두지 않았다. 관객이 보이는 것을 좇는 익숙한 방식에서 벗어나, 보이지 않는 방식으로 존재하는 것들에 주의를 기울이게 되기를 기대한다.

Lingering Sensations is an exhibition about the sensations that persist after things which once held a visible form have disappeared. We ordinarily confirm the existence of an object through its contour and its form. What is visually identifiable — edges and volume, the silhouette drawn by light and shadow — has served as the ground of existence. Yet when we rely on sight alone for the evidence of existence, we lose sight of what remains even after form has withdrawn. This exhibition deliberately empties the object's form out of that sight-centered perception, and attends to the invisible residue left in the place it has vacated.
This residue does not perish along with the object. It is an intermediate state between direct presence and complete absence; it dwells in the space for a certain time and slowly disperses. If seeing and touching are senses that presuppose the presence of an object, then sensing something is a sense that operates even in the object's absence. Even when nothing is before our eyes, we know that something was just there. The sense at work here precedes reduction to any particular form or name, and belongs to a domain that is neither visually confirmed nor clearly defined in language. Lingering Sensations takes this domain as its subject — the point where things that are unseen yet sensed come to rest.
The works in the exhibition treat this residue of sensation each in their own way. Without a prescribed path or thematic division, they are juxtaposed in a single space and loosely connected to one another. Moving between one work and the next, the audience comes to experience another layer of space, one made by the things that cannot be seen.
Rather than offering a single conclusion, each work approaches in its own manner the shared question of what remains where form has disappeared. The answer may be a sound, a smell, an afterimage of light, or some sensation not yet clearly defined. No limit was placed on the medium of expression. The hope is that the audience, departing from the familiar habit of chasing what is visible, will turn their attention to what exists in ways that cannot be seen.
